Barbara Weir was born circa 1945 on Bundy River Station in the area of Utopia region of Central Australia. Barbara Weir's mother is the late famous Aboriginal artist, Minnie Pwerle and Barbara's father was an Irish station master named Jack Weir. Barbara was a member of the Stolen Generation and taken from her family and fostered, but, in the 1960's Barbara returned to Utopia with her six children and reconnected with her mother and lived with her aunt, Emily Kame Kngwarreye.

Barbara began painting with acrylics on canvas in 1989 and developed a sophisticated contemporary painting style. She also paints with ochre. In 1994, Barbara Weir and other Aboriginal women travelled to Indonesia to learn batik techniques and in 1996, Barbara travelled to Europe to exhibit her artworks - and from this point on she has been recognised as one of Australia's leading Aboriginal painters.

Barbara is most famous for her vibrant contemporary depictions of Grass Seeds, but since the passing of her mother, she has revisited her ‘My Mothers Country’ dreaming, producing significant paintings with deep personal meaning and spirituality.
