Exhibitions / Paul Colbey - Paint Me Patriotic
08.06.2012 to 15.06.2012
Artist Paul Colbey was born in London in 1960. Although he has spent a lifetime in Ausralia, his latest pieces continue the work of his fellow countrymen in celebrating - or skewering - the icons of British establishment in the pop art style. Great British artists such as Richard Hamilton, who died last year at the age of 89, poked fun at the establishment and made it laugh at itself and built a lasting pop art legacy at the same time.
Two works from Paul's exhibition in particular hark back to his London roots. Original London newspapers from the day of the Queen's coronation are now the backrop, under layers of acrylic paint, resin and the odd Aussie postage stamp to striking, contemporary statements. Paul may be having fun at Fleet Street's expense - this time The Daily Mail and the London Times - but in this her jubilee year, we can't help thinking the Queen might just have a chuckle at these paintings too!
During the exhibition dates, Paint Me Patriotic may be viewed here.
