                       c1928 - January 2017

Kudditji Kngwarreye was the younger brother of the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye. He was an Anmatyerre elder and custodian of many important Dreamings, including his most famous dreaming – My Country

Kudditji began painting in a fine dot style in the 1980's, and in his later years developed the colourful, layered block style representing his Country.  He worked with a fully loaded brush in broad, sweeping strokes and worked most often with only two main colours in his palette.  He was known for singing his stories as he painted with the rythmn  reflected in his strokes.

Kudditji has participated in many international exhibitions and was most well known  for the depiction of his Dreamings related to the law of the Emu ancestors. His works show bold use of colour and to the Western eye, they often evoke the abstract expressionism of American, Mark Rothko.  While Kudditji’s approach was unique in Aboriginal art, everything about it -- from his use of colour, to the bold graphic symbols to the rhythmic movement – was evidence of his profound connection to his Country and his culture.

Kudditji's works are highly collectible and much sought after both here and internationally.  His works feature in major national and international collections.

Sadly Kudditji, known as Goob to those who loved and respected him, passed away peacefully in Alice Springs in January, 2017.
